Garbuche


An extremely strong, horned loadbeast, the Garbuche is even stronger and stupider than a Carter. It is also less tractable. A frightened or enraged Garbuche is a danger to the surrounding community, so many cities ban them from being used to work inside the city during daylight hours, or even ban them totally. However, a Garbuche can pull enormous loads with ease and they will eat things (thornbushes, stubble, etc) that a Carter would turn its nose up at, so they are a common sight on the highways of many countries. A further point in the Garbuche's favour is its broad, almost flat, back. Often, this is used as a resting place for the rider and it is not uncommon to see a Garbuche plodding along, its owner asleep on a straw pallet on its back. The ribs of a Garbuche are splayed out rather than curling in, and bone spurs project out, their sharp tips protecting the animal's flanks. Working Garbuches normally have these spines cut off, but they can be quite formidable on an old wild Garbuche. In the Khish states, warriors sometimes attach gilded and painted palanquins to the back of Garbuches and goad them into a rage with a spiked prods and fireworks. The disadvantage of this is that although little can withstand the charge of a maddened Garbuche, the riders have no control over their direction. They rely on the fact that a charging Garbuche tends not to be diverted by anything, and the riders hope to be able to bale out in the midst of their enemies.
