Dyrewolf

This is one of the largest and most feared predators of the northern forests. Dyrewolves can stand up to 1 1/2 metres at the shoulder and their shaggy grey coats make them look even bigger than they really are. The howl of the Dyrewolf is one of the most chilling sounds that wanderers in the northern forest know. The Dyrewolf is well equipped for its sanguinary role. It has massive jaws capable of shearing even heavy bones in two and its head, forequarters and back are covered with a hard integument - which is actually formed of hardened hair, like the horns of some beasts. Dyrewolves are not terribly fast, but stalk their prey silently and tend to spring from ambush to rend and tear. They are excellent trackers though, and if wounded prey escapes they will trail it for hours - sometimes days. Normally Dyrewolves hunt in mated pairs or small family groups, but in hard winters they will band together and then they will tackle the largest prey or even attack human dwellings.
