Vervort Hammerhand

Vervort Hammerhand is a straggly-grey-haired, muscular giant of a man, who often works a water ferry plying the docks of Grathrendrus. He is head of the loose Guild of Water-carriers, who work as both labourers and water-taxis around the city. According to the local law enforcement agencies, the guild is composed mainly of thieves and vagabonds and they have their eye on Vervort, although they've never been able to pin anything on him.

By night, however, Vervort seems to disappear into the mists. In fact, he maintains a much more genteel residence in the northern part of the city, and he is known at the Duces Court as a minor noble. His hair pulled back into a pigtail in the fashion of the northern nobility, with thick glasses, he is thought reclusive and a trifle eccentric. Not considered someone with enough influence to be of great interest in the intrigues of the court, he is able to wander without attracting much attention. All of which suits his employer - the Duce himself - very well. For many years now, Vervort has been his personal executioner and torturer. When someone in the city attracts the Duce's ire - Vervort is discreetly informed. His contacts in the Water-carriers Guild act as a conduit for the information that Vervort cannot gather himself at court, and as a source of discreet muscle for some jobs.

What not even the Duce knows is that Vervort is a member of the Inquisition - the Eyes of the Emperor. Little that goes on in the court of Grathendrus escapes Vervort's notice - and thus that of the imperial court. While Vervort has never received any formal martial arts training, he is an extraordinarily accomplished dirty fighter, and he is far stronger than his advanced years would lead one to believe. Indeed, his favoured method of assassination is to subdue his victims with his bare hands and then break their neck - making the cause of death look like a slip or a fall. In the court at Grathrendrus the phase "He took a fall" has come to have a sinister connotation over the years. Vervort looks about 50, standing almost 2 metres tall. He has long, wiry arms with oversized, calloused hands and his skin is tanned and leathery. In his court persona he puts these unusual features down to his love of sailing and boring listeners into retreat with sailing stories of the great river is one way he maintains his facade at court, and explains his frequent absences.

Equipment

In his court persona, Vervort usually carries no weapons, and even in his water-carrier job nothing more threatening than a dagger. He does, however, also usually have a couple of heavy leather gloves with him, which are lined with fine mail. These give him something to block with, should he face an armed opponent, and 4 PD/ED armour on his hands.

He also wears a heavy silver ring, with the following useful power - Invisibility to spells of detection (with fringe effect). He can however, requisition arms, armour and low powered magical items from the Duce's treasury when he is required to perform a job. Assume he can help himself to anything from the magic list under 10 real points in cost, and up to three time that if set on the trail of someone reckoned to be especially dangerous.
