Amhara

Amhara is a Keshite and a member of the Red Brotherhood. He's the sort of walking cliche Saharnian mothers along the Mithil coast like to terrify their children with - a jewelery bedecked, dark-skinned warrior with arms that ripple with muscle. He is a typical (if large) Keshite warrior to most of his comrades in arms too - a doughty fighter and a good sailor. None of them know him very well, though. Amhara is something of a wanderer, and has moved from ship to ship, crew to crew over the years. At times he disappears for weeks or months and then turns up again. He never has any trouble finding a new ship - he has a good reputation, and most captains are happy to take on a warrior of his size. No-one asks what he does when he's away: visiting some doxy, or perhaps an inland family, most assume. In truth, it's something more dangerous, for Amhara has a history somewhat diferent from the mass of Keshites from poor coastal villages who turned to piracy as an alternative to subsistance fishing. Captured as a youth and sold as a slave in Saharn, he had the fortune to have a master - a priest of the Great God - who saw past his size to his quick wit. Amhara learned to read and write and quickly became fluent in several languages, serving his master as both scribe and body servant. He never accepted his slavery, however, though he hid his resentment well and when the opportunity arose, he fled. An escaped slave is never safe, and one who had been privy to temple matters even less so. Amhara sought refuge with a raggle-taggle group of corsairs and then later with the Red Brotherhood. However, from time to time he slips ashore in disguise, sometimes alone, and sometimes with like-minded comrades such as Chandara the Golden. His purpose on these missions is always the disruption of the slave trade - sometimes ambushing slavers, sometimes freeing captives, occasionally simply disrupting households that employ slaves.

In appearance, Amhara is not overly tall, but he is broad and has heavily muscled forearms and shoulders laced with scars. His head is shaved and he wears (mostly) heavy silver jewellery and a mail shirt. However, he is skilled at altering his appearance and can appear as a citizen of any of the countries bordering the Mithil Sea. In combat, he has adopted the great two-handed sword of the Kvarch-nari, which he wields to devastating effect. In personality he is quiet, and speaks little though he is not easily intimidated. Most people look at his muscular build and underestimate his intelligence. Amhara doesn't mind this - he's found it an advantage in the past.
