Icegrim

 

Icegrim is a Frost Giant, one of the ancient survivors of the Dark Millenium. He dwells among the upper reaches of the peaks of the mountains of Mist, east of the Olmai Coast. To the Olmai he is a fearful legend - the father of Winter personified. He is supposed to stride down out of the mountains on stormy nights plundering isolated steadings for food and slaves, although the long ages and his solitude have softened his hatred of humanity. While he likes nothing better than killing and looting, the centuries and his comrades' disappearance have taught him caution. His lonely court is home to misfits of all sorts - Giants (though none so old or powerful as he), Trolls, Ogres and the less fastidious sort of faerie folk. He even welcomes rare human travellers (normally heroes on some quest or other) for their novelty value, and stories are told in human lands of those who have ventured to his Icy Keep. However, he still has no love for humanity and any visitor to his court must abide by strict rules and conditions and earn their place at his table in combat, story-telling competitions and riddle test. Those who fail become his thralls - or his supper. However, he is wise in forgotten lore, and can be bargained with for it. He has also been said to richly reward those who can divert him. All these tales notwithstanding, his castle is a bane to the local inhabitants, and he delights in afflicting his neighbours with unseasonable storms.

In appearance he appears as an old, but hearty man, with flowing locks streaked with grey and a curling beard - only he stands 4 metres tall! His eyebrows jut ferociously above deep-set blue eyes - generally slightly reddened. He most often appears with a purloined tapestry for a cloak, either barechested, or wearing his enormous hauberk, made (so it is said) from the armour of defeated heroes.
